regi{\~a}o.
(menores) magnitudes, as maiores (menores) varia{\c{c}}{\~o}es
A partir dessa an{\'a}lise,
anticiclone em superf{\'{\i}}cie; (7) a propaga{\c{c}}{\~a}o
poss{\'{\i}}vel precursor de eventos de geada no sul do Brasil;
Regi{\~a}o Sul do Brasil, ocorrido ap{\'o}s o diagn{\'o}stico
fen{\^o}meno geada. ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to
obtain both atmospheric patterns associated with Intense Drop of
air Temperature (IDT) in the South Region of Brazil and a
statistical analysis about Drop of air Temperature (DT) and IDT in
this region. Minimum and maximum daily air temperature (T) data
from 28 meteorological stations, the reanalysis data of NCEP-NCAR
and infrared satellite pictures during wintertime (May-
September), from 1996 to 2003, were used. At first, the study of
the magnitude, of the distribution and of the spatial and temporal
frequency of both IDT and DT was realized. This analysis shows
that the biggest (lesser) magnitudes, distributions and daily
variability of both IDT and DT occurred on the west sector (coast)
of the South Region of Brazil. A detailed analysis of the IDT
allowed for one given meteorological station, a classification:
Type A, events of cold air incursion that were not capable to
provoke a negative T anomaly; Type B, represents the exchange of
positive T anomalous for an anomalous cold air of the region; e
Type C, corresponds events of cold air incursion during a period
of negative T anomaly. After this analysis, extreme events of Type
B IDT occurred in two distinct areas on the region were selected
to construct composite fields. Amongst the three IDT types, the
Type B represented better the exchange of air masses over Southern
Brazil and it was more frequent. The most important atmospheric
patterns associated with IDT on the South of Brazil were: (1) the
influence of the Atlantic Subtropical High in the permanence
northwesterly flow over South America (SA), bringing warm and
humidity from the tropical latitudes to South Region of Brazil
before the IDT on the region, contributing to the increase of the
T and of the specific humidity, beyond the reduction of sea level
pressure on the region; (2) the presence of a northwesterly jet in
low levels over SA (22°S) two days before the QAT in the South
Region of Brazil; (3) the displacement of an anticyclone for the
Pacific Ocean East to the interior of SA with a continental
trajectory just one day before the IDT; (4) intensification of the
pressure gradient over the Southeast of the SA, between the
highpressure system over the continent and the low pressure over
the Atlantic Ocean, favoring cold and dry air incursion over the
south of Brazil in the day of the IDT; (5) change in the flow from
north to south in low levels over the South Region of Brazil in
the day of the IDT; (6) the intensification of the high level Jet
over the subtropical region of the SA with at least two days
before the occurrence of the IDT in the study region, contributing
for the intensification of the anticyclone in surface; (7) the
propagation of a baroclinic wave over the Pacific Ocean some days
before the IDT, showing a downstream amplification of the wave.
Its a possible precursor to major freeze events over South Brazil;
and (8) the composites of the cases selected for the north sector
of the South Region of Brazil presented, in general, a similar
atmospheric patterns with the composites of the cases selected for
the south sector of the region, however more intense. Thus,
improvement of the knowledge of the atmospheric conditions in IDT
situations, that contribution to a better understanding of the
cold air incursions over South Region of Brazil were showed.
Finally, a synoptic analysis of a total frost case on the South
Region of Brazil occurred after the diagnosis of IDT over a large
extent of the study region was made, associated with the
atmospheric patterns of IDT.",
